If you just listen to opera, you miss ⅔ of the experience, especially if you're not fluent in the language being sung. The music may be spectacular but who is singing? What’s going on? What are they singing about? A live performance is best but a video with subtitles is a decent alternative, and far cheaper. Operas are hilarious, dramatic, uplifting, poignant, soulful . . . certainly not always screechy women, fat men, doom and death. They are selected each month from DVDs or on-line performances. Operas may be chosen because they are favourites or because they are new and unknown to us and we want to broaden our experience. They all have English subtitles, making it easy to follow the action and we meet on the 4th Wednesday of each month at 10.00am. in Mountfield (in Bridport town centre) to watch them.
